Moving Advice for First-Time Homeowners

Many times, moving to a new home can be all kinds of stressful, simply because there is so much to do. But when you’re a first-time homeowner, the stress of moving often dissipates. After all, you’re finally leaving the apartment or rental life behind and getting a space that’s all your own! If you’re a first-time homeowner, you may find the following moving advice helpful:

  • Use the opportunity to spring clean. We know that living in an apartment may not have given you much space for extra storage, but you’d probably be surprised at how much stuff people accumulate! As you pack, consider whether you need each item before stuffing it into a box. Sort items into piles of things you want to keep, toss and sell/donate. Then hold a moving sale for the items you no longer want. Start off your move into a home with a fresh start!
  • Don’t worry about filling your home right away. This is a piece of moving advice many do not heed – but later, wish they had. Upon moving into a home for the first time, some are tempted to fill every room with furniture. However, if you’re moving into a larger space than you previously had, you won’t have enough furniture and décor to do it. But move in first, and then take your time deciding how you want to use each room. It’s okay to leave a room empty for a time while you figure it out!
  • Wait until after the move to purchase appliances. It’s exciting to go pick out a new stainless steel refrigerator and front-loading washer and dryer, especially after using the twenty-year-old appliances at your apartment complex. However, if you make the purchases before moving into your new home, you’ll have to pay extra to move them! It’s far better to wait, make your selections upon moving in and pay the minimal delivery and installation fee charged by the appliance company.
