North American Van Lines: The Best of St John's Moving Companies
Not only is St. John’s the capital city of Newfoundland and Labrador, but it’s also considered the oldest city in North America. St. John’s can be found on the Avalon Peninsula in the southeast of the island of Newfoundland.
St. John’s is known for its distinct architecture, which differs from other parts of Canada as the buildings here feature remnants of the past. The city got it’s name from the fest day of John the Baptist after John Cabot was thought to have sailed into the harbour in 1479.
St. John’s experiences a humid continental climate with mild winters and cool-to-warm summers. In the winter, the temperature drops to an average around negative 1.5 degrees Celsius, and in the summer it climbs to around 20 degrees.
As of the 2012 Canadian Census, there were 200,600 residents living in St. John’s, and more people are looking to call this home as the population grew 7 percent between 2006 and 2011.
Attractions and Activities in St. John's
One of the most popular attractions in St. John’s is The Rooms, which is a major cultural centre for Newfoundland and Labrador. The name of the building and the architecture reference the gable-roofed sheds, known as fishing rooms, that were once common along the Newfoundland fishing villages. Inside The Rooms you can check out the Newfoundland Museum, the Provincial Archives and the Art Gallery of Newfoundland. Be sure to head to the upper floor as well to take in unbeatable views.
Enjoy the city’s outdoor space at Bowring Park, which offers 20 hectares of parkland complete with bridges, walking trails, duck ponds, tennis courts, playgrounds and monuments. There’s even an outdoor pool here, so you and the family can cool off with a refreshing dip before a delicious picnic in the grass.
