Digby, Nova Scotia, is located on the western shore of Annapolis Basin, which connects to the Bay of Fundy. The area was originally called Oositookun by the Mi'kmaq. In the 1760s, settlers from New England reached the area, and the community was formally founded in June 1783 and incorporated in February 1890. The area grew in size and importance due to its maritime location as steamships passed through, collecting and distributing goods throughout Nova Scotia. A train station allowed for enhanced transportation by the early 20th century. Fishing and tourism grew in importance by the early to mid-20th century, and the community established a special annual event called the Scallop Days Festival. This event has gone on for nearly 100 years and includes children's activities, locally caught seafood, music, and art. Another exciting annual event is the Wharf Rat Rally, which is held on the Canadian Labor Day weekend. This event features the largest gathering of motorcycles on the Atlantic side of Canada.
You may also wish to explore some of the other great places around Digby, such as the Annapolis Basin Provincial Park, which has many miles of paved and groomed trails, ponds, and wooded areas. At the Lake Midway Provincial Park, you can go fishing, canoeing, or swimming. The park also has great wildlife viewing areas for bird-watching.
