The first settlers were actually English from Eastern Ontario and Great Britain while a large amount of residents are descended from immigrants from Ukraine who came in the early 20^th century.

Yorkton serves as the main shopping and service centre for much of east-central Saskatchewan and Western Manitoba. As far as recreation and attractions, Yorkton knows how to keep residents entertained. The Yorkton Film Festival spun to life in October 1950 and has been a key event held in the community each year. Another fun attraction is the Yorkton Gallagher Centre. It includes an arena, curling rink, conference rooms, and an indoor swimming pool. Yorkton is also home to two ice hockey teams, the Yorkton Terriers and the Yorkton Rawtec Maulers, who play their games in the Gallagher Centre. Some other sports teams that call Yorkton home are the western major baseball league Yorkton Cardinals and the box lacrosse team Yorkton Bulldogs.
